“Should I do RF microneedling or a laser?” I hear this question almost every week, in all three of our offices.
It makes sense. Both treatments promise smoother, healthier-looking skin. Both stimulate collagen. And on social media they can look almost identical.
But they work in very different ways, they’re best at different things, and choosing the wrong one for your concern can mean spending time and money on a result you weren’t really after.
I spent years as a clinical nurse educator, teaching other providers how energy-based devices actually work. So this is one of my favorite topics to break down.
Here’s how I explain the difference to my own patients.
The short answer: RF microneedling works deeper, below the surface, so it’s best for firmness, acne scars, enlarged pores, and texture. ULTRA laser resurfacing works closer to the surface, so it’s best for sun spots, uneven tone, dullness, and fine surface texture. Many people benefit from both.
How RF Microneedling Works
RF microneedling combines two things: ultra-fine needles and radiofrequency energy.
The needles create tiny, controlled channels to a precise depth in the skin. Then radiofrequency energy releases gentle heat right at that depth, in the dermis, where collagen and elastin live. Over the following weeks and months, your skin responds by rebuilding itself firmer and smoother from within.
Because the energy goes in below the surface, RF microneedling causes far less surface disruption than an aggressive laser. That’s also why it’s a great option for every skin type and every season.
What RF Microneedling Treats Best
- Loose or crepey skin and early laxity
- Acne scars and other textural scarring
- Enlarged pores
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Rough, uneven texture
Potenza at Our Staten Island Office
In Staten Island, we use Potenza RF microneedling. What I love about Potenza is how customizable it is. It has four energy modes, so I can direct energy deeper for tightening or keep it closer to the surface for texture.
I adjust needle depth for every area, so the delicate skin around your eyes gets a very different setting than acne scarring on your cheeks. Its Fusion Tip also pairs the treatment with targeted serums that absorb more deeply through those microchannels.
Genius at Our Rye Office
In Rye, we offer RF microneedling with the Lutronic Genius, which works on the same principle: tiny needles delivering radiofrequency energy deep into the skin to boost collagen and elastin and tighten from within.
How ULTRA Laser Resurfacing Works
The Lutronic ULTRA is a non-ablative fractional laser that works at a 1927nm wavelength. That’s a lot of technical words, so here’s what it means for your skin.
- Non-ablative means it doesn’t remove the top layer of your skin the way a traditional CO2 laser does (see traditional CO2 vs. CoolPeel). There are no open wounds and no long recovery.
- Fractional means it treats thousands of tiny zones at a time while leaving healthy skin in between, which helps you heal faster.
- The 1927nm wavelength targets the upper layers of the skin, exactly where sun damage, pigment, and dullness live.
Over the next several days, damaged and pigmented cells shed and fresher skin takes their place. Most of my patients describe their skin as brighter, smoother, and more even within about a week, with just some mild redness and dryness while it renews.
What ULTRA Treats Best
- Sun spots, age spots, and freckling
- Uneven skin tone and dullness
- Fine surface texture
- Light acne scarring and discoloration
- Overall glow
The ULTRA is one of The Formula’s signature technologies, and it’s available at both of our offices: laser skin resurfacing in Staten Island and our Laser Formulas in Rye.

So, Which One Is Right for You?
Here’s the simplest way I put it: RF microneedling fixes structure. ULTRA fixes the surface.
Choose RF microneedling if:
- Your skin is starting to feel looser, especially along the jawline or neck
- You have acne scars or deeper textural scarring
- Your pores look enlarged
- You want gradual tightening without surgery
Choose ULTRA if:
- Your biggest concern is brown spots, freckling, or sun damage
- Your skin looks dull or uneven, even with makeup
- You want a visible glow with minimal downtime
- You have an event coming up and want brighter skin within about a week
When I Recommend Both
Most of us don’t have just one concern. Years of South Shore summers, ferry commutes, or Westchester weekends outdoors leave sun damage on the surface, while time and collagen loss show up underneath as laxity and texture, the slow decline that collagen banking is meant to get ahead of.
That’s why I often combine them. In Rye, our Laser Total Skin formula pairs the ULTRA with Genius RF microneedling to address pigment, texture, and tightening together. In Staten Island, I’ll often build a plan that alternates Potenza and the ULTRA. We’ll space your treatments so your skin has time to heal and respond between sessions. Here’s more on how the Lutronic laser formula tightens skin laxity.
The right answer really depends on your skin, your goals, and your schedule. That’s exactly what we figure out together at your consultation.
Let’s Find Your Formula
You don’t have to figure this out on your own. At your complimentary consultation, we’ll look closely at your skin, talk about what bothers you most, and build a plan around your goals and your calendar, whether that’s one treatment, the other, or a combination of both.
